What is endovenous laser ablation (EVLA)?

What does endovenous laser ablation involve?
Endovenous laser ablation involves your doctor using laser technology to close problematic veins. Prior to the procedure, your doctor will clean, sterilize, and cover your leg. Your doctor will then start the procedure by numbing the area around your affected vein with local anesthetics. Once you are comfortable and relaxed, your doctor will make a small incision near the affected vein. Your doctor will then gently insert and carefully guide a thin tube, known as a catheter, through the incision.
For the final stages of the procedure, your doctor will move a laser fiber through the catheter and laser energy is applied to treat the problem vein. After the procedure is complete, the treated varicose vein will shrink and disappear over time.
Recovery time after endovenous laser ablation is minimal. You may be able to return to your normal activities the same day as your procedure.
