Holter Monitor in NYC
What is a Holter monitor?
A Holter monitor is a carry-around device that measures and records the activity of your heart for a continuous time frame of 24 to 48 hours. The Holter monitor can sometimes be used to record the activity of your heart for more than 48 hours.
Why is a Holter monitor used?
A Holter monitor is used so that your doctor can assess your heartbeat for abnormalities when a traditional electrocardiogram (EKG) is unable to pick up abnormalities in your heartbeat during an office visit. However, if the Holter monitor does not pick up any abnormalities, your doctor may recommend an event monitor or a wireless Holter monitor for additional testing. A Holter monitor can also be used to help diagnose certain heart conditions.
How does a Holter monitor work?
A Holter monitor works by recording your heart’s activity through sensors placed on your chest. Before equipping you with your Holter monitor, your doctor will ensure that the chest area is cleaned and sterilized – if you're a male, your doctor will shave any necessary areas of your chest. Once these steps are completed, your doctor will instruct you on how to use and maintain your device outside of the office.
Do not get your Holter monitor wet. Water damage will cause the device to no longer function properly. Be sure to take the device off when swimming, bathing, or engaging in other water-related activities.
What are the benefits of using a Holter monitor?
Holter monitors are beneficial because they allow your doctor to monitor your heartbeat for abnormalities that may have otherwise been undetectable during an office visit with a standard electrocardiogram (EKG). Holter monitors are painless; aside from potential skin irritation, Holter monitors do not come with great risks and you should be able to comfortably go about your daily activities as usual.
